Late night idea: sometimes, Racoons can temporarily aid you with flight. Sure sounds better than getting thrown over pits!

(SMB3's Racoon Leaf might return as a rare power-up only found in the Shine Shrine courses; think how the Penguin and Propeller suit is treated in NSMBU.)

The Super Mario World manual's story says that it's a vacation the bros took with Peach after defeating Bowser in SMB3. It also suggests that the sunken ship level is an airship that Bowser crashed into Dinosaur Land after the events as well.
