I finally watched Soviet Folk Horror VIY (1967), and loved it to bits! A gloriously inventive technical achievement (I have to assume Sam Raimi is a fan), with fun performances and a terrific score. The climactic eye-popping phantasmagoria unleashed is truly a sight to behold..!
One of those crucial missing links in #horror cinema’s development, Soviet classic #VIY finally gets the attention it deserves via #MastersofCinema Blu-ray.

Love movie nights with @Muirin007
Our double feature was ‘Viy’ and ‘Gothic’.
One a Hammer-ish Russian flick with a witch who rides a coffin.
The other, Ken Russell’s bonkers take on Mary Shelley’s night at Villa Diodati.
Both under 90 mins
Both visually insane
Would recommend🍷

#FairyTaleTuesday "Viy" is a novella by Nikolai Gogol. The title is the name of the entity central to the plot.Gogol insisted that Viy, the King of the Gnomes, was a character from Ukrainian folklore, but no discovery has been made of any East Slavic folktale resembling the story

Just for fun, this is based off a scene in the 1967 film, “Viy” I watched recently. I love horror/Halloween/spo0o0oky movies and watch a lot especially this time of year. Check out Viy if you haven’t before, it’s got some really fun and clever pre-cgi special effects...
