El verano de 1883, Homer se mudó de Nueva York a Prouts Neck, Maine, al sur de Portland. Excepto para los viajes de vacaciones a los Adirondacks, Canadá, Florida y el Caribe, donde pintó bellísimas acuarelas, vivió de forma solitaria en Maine hasta su muerte en 1921.
