usually do the base colour, shade from above with a darker one maks some lines around the pupil with it than a even darker shade up top with an airbrush again, at the bottom a bright colour airbrushed in with a lil light cycle, around the pupil with the base colour and lightlines

I’m not quite sure how to answer, personally — I do a bit of both.

In my case, I tend to mostly do hard lighting because it suits my style, but airbrushed lighting can also work well for more impactful results. Sometimes I mix both in one image.

Depending on the amount of colors in the gradient map, some airbrushed things, i.e. the cheek blush (since it has a LOT of values) might turn into more of a blob!

This is the logo used everywhere except the film's onscreen title card. Having recreated it digitally I can understand the time and effort that was put into the original painted and airbrushed artwork. The masks alone must have been days worth of work.
