Sailors in the South Sea gape at an albatross perched on the icy deck. This engraving is by Gustave Doré for an 1876 edition of the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coleridge.
Anne shows no interest in the Lake Poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) and Robert Southey (1774-1843).
Southey, Poet laureate, lived at Greta Hall, Keswick from 1804 with his & Coleridge's family since Coleridge abandoned them. Author of Goldilocks and the Three Bears etc.
I finally wrapped up this Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner inspired commission featuring one of my favorites, the #albatross

O it is pleasant, with a heart at ease,
Just after sunset, or by moonlight skies,
To make the shifting clouds be what you please.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born #OnThisDay in 1772. Coleridge persuaded his brother-in-law and fellow poet Robert Southey to move to Keswick in 1803. After meeting Coleridge in 1794, Southey described him as being 'of the strongest genius the clearest judgment & the best heart'.

#SuperstitionSat The albatross as a superstitious relic is referenced in Coleridge's 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. It is considered unlucky to kill an albatross; in the poem the narrator kills the bird and his fellow sailors force him to wear the dead bird around his neck.
