In Tolkien's notes, the Mountains of Tiranny were created by Morgoth in order to conceal his fortress Angband. When the Dark Lord was defeated, Eärendil slew Ancalagon the Black and the great dragon crashed upon these mountains, destroying them.

Howe's compositions are so good. One of my all time favorite scenes from the Silmarillion, rarely has good art (imo) because they always take 1 metaphor and blow it out of proportion (Morgoth looming like a mountain or something) but Howe's "fingolfin's challenge" is amazing
