Initially he painted landscapes before, as his reputation grew, he turned to genre by 1808. His first works were shown at the 1804 RA exhibition. Suffolk Landscape (c1810), John Varley (1814) & Horses (1816). Varley was his brother-in-law.

15 July 1932. The prototype low-wing monoplane Vickers Type 171 Jockey was lost during spinning trials at Martlesham Heath when it entered a flat spin and crashed at Woodbridge, Suffolk. The pilot successfully bailed out at 5,000 feet.
