The closest animals were the pterosaurs, whose name literally translates to "winged lizard"
Have spent a lot of this week working on a new Jurassic marine life mural (will be released soon), so here's #paleoart for #FossilFriday on the same theme: Jurassic ichthyosaur Ophthalmosaurus, plus bonus pterosaurs.
#PterosaurPtuesday Here are a few of the 30+ Pterosaur species that will appear in my book “Journey To The Mesozoic”: Campylognathoides, Alkaruen, Darwinopterus, Archaeoistiodactylus, Qinglongopterus, Cycnorhamphus & Ctenochasma #pterosaurs #paleoart
Arambourgiania was one of the largest pterosaurs, with a wingspan of up to 13 metres!

Our models of how pterosaurs flew may be all wrong, contends a new study: https://t.co/T4biOVTAS3 @GemmaTarlach
New on Pteros: Carniadactylus lived about 215 million years ago near the northern shore of the ancient Tethys Ocean. #pterosaurs #fossils #science https://t.co/4eKpuu9uB9

This formation in China is among the richest known site for Cretaceous Period fossils all over the world. It was a lakeside environment with a number of feathered dinosaurs and a variety of pterosaurs that fed on fish.

Both fossil specimens of Prejanopterus show a snout curved to the left. If this is not distortion of the fossil, Prejanopterus is surely one of the weirdest #pterosaurs. #fossils #science https://t.co/OJgmPKFOga
Almost forgot #FossilFriday: here's some #paleoart of azhdarchid pterosaurs wandering over a riverbank, seen from above. Their pacing matches that of the azhdarchid ichnofossil, Haenamichnus, one of the only pterosaur tracks with an ID beyond 'pterosaur indet'.
Did som ref sheets for my pterosaurs. Quincy needed a new one and Pyro just.... needed one.
Pyros og design was made by @Holo_Scales
It’s #PterosaurPtuesday, so here is my reconstruction of Campylognathoides liasicus and its long, LONG, wings. One of the three species of #pterosaurs found at the Posidonia Shale, Early Jurassic (Toarcian), Germany 🇩🇪 #pterosaurs #paleoart
Pterosaurs by John Conway https://t.co/qFS9oLRI7i
Germanodactylus cristatus
Tupandactylus imperator
Nyctosaurs
Nemicolopterus crypticus

For #FossilFriday: a rarely seen comparison between giant azhdarchid pterosaurs and a large male giraffe (yes, they can get this big!). Pterosaurs are Arambourgiania (left) and Hatzegopteryx - slender and robust takes on the giant azhdarchid bauplan. @Gizz47 is the scale bar.

Aussiedraco, the “Aussie dragon,” is one of only a few named Australian #pterosaurs. #fossils #science https://t.co/D1XEql9yxW
@franzanth @OliverDemuth @ArtofFabricious @JoschuaKnuppe This has also been a productive year for the @flyingreptiles team. We’re about 40 entries away from listing currently known pterosaurs!
If you haven't, follow our sister acc @studio252mya for more art!

And because today is #PterosaurTuesday here is one of the Pterosaurs I’m preparing (WIP) for my book #JTTM”: Tendaguripterus recki from the Tendaguru Fm, Late Jurassic Tanzania #paleoart #pterosaurs
More #Pterosaurs. My slightly revised version of Eudimorphodon ranzii, a basal pterosaur from the Late Triassic, Zorzino Fm 🇮🇹 #paleoart
New blog post: The appearance and lifestyle of Thalassodromeus sethi, one of the most awesome #pterosaurs of all.

For #FossilFriday, #paleoart of big azhdarchid pterosaurs, small azhdarchid pterosaurs, and azhdarchid tracks. That's good azhdarchid value.
