NiGHTS is not a Sonic character, but that Sonic Pinball Party artwork was illustrated by Uekawa, and Lumina and Void take some obvious inspiration from the character. Lumina also has a human form in Shuffle. Another taste of an Uekawa styled human.

Yuji Uekawa designed the Billy Hatcher characters, so if you take those characters and throw them alongside the Sonic cast, they fit perfectly. It's the same design philosophy after all. Uekawa also drew Hatsune Miku some years back.

I don't think Sega gives Uekawa's modern art style a chance to shine. He's relegated to promotional art, random Twitter cameos and book covers nowadays. Either by obligation or by choice. I still think the games could benefit greatly from his touch.

the differences are subtle, but as folks have pointed out; they add up

It's akin to why I prefer Uekawa's older, rubberhose-style Sonic art to some of his newer stuff that gives Sonic more defined joints and armature akin to his 3D models; they're both the same style, but differ
