I actually agree, I also feel that most of Yuji Uekawa's artwork of recent times have more variations of expressions with Sonic. All his old artwork is just Sonic doing the same copy-pasted smirk over and over.
I get people preferring the smirk, but Sonic was stuck with it

things i learned abt Yuji Uekawa's SA art:
-lines of action everywhere. character art made up of so many interlocking curves that i'm amazed it works
-lots of edge lighting to suggest volume/depth without a specific lightsource. reminds me of traditional tattoo/graffiti values
