Stern understands that Peter Parker is very close to having a villain's origin story.

It's quite apparent here, where Stern revisits the Lee/Ditko origin, capturing a lot of the nastiness of the early characterisation of Peter.

As I've been reflecting on the life of Stan Lee these past few days, I'm drawn to this guy. Spider-Man. Him, & the fact that it's so inspiring for a creative like me that Stan and Ditko took an idea out of thin air and made a something bigger than themselves.

You might be interested to know that Ditko told me, via letter, the reason he changed the Green Goblin's broomstick to a bat was because Stan thought it was too phallic. The bat is iconic now, but I always admired how delightfully weird that first Goblin appearance is.
