is by Posy Simmonds for "Matilda, who told such dreadful lies" by Hilaire Belloc (1992). I can't imagine why telling lies is on my mind. Anyway, as a child, I relished this poem & the dark humour. Simmonds's illustrations are, as ever, perfection.

is by Eric Winter for "Sleeping Beauty" retold by Vera Southgate (1965). I love the bad fairy scurrying off. The clarity of storytelling in these Ladybird Books is quite something, and they've been imprinted upon a whole generation.

is by for "Tomorrow" (2018). A powerful, important book about Yazan, a young boy seeking hope in a time of conflict. The illustrations capture his fear & vulnerability. A shout out for the & in books!
