I don't think it's meant to be alternate coloured, they just used the palette they're used to using for the random Gengar but decided to update it to match most modern material for the important one. Washed up Gengar's been a thing since forever and the anime just caught up

Honestly, I think Gengar might be one of the best possible choices for Smash right now. Not only is the popularity clearly there (it’s Pokémon of the Year, after all), it’s also extremely relevant (playable in Pokken, owned by Ash, major character in Rescue Team DX)

This might be really petty of me, but… Am I the only one who isn’t a fan of the colors on Ash’s Gengar? It’s just, I dunno, too “soft” for my liking. The darker contrasts for other Gengar just really sell it as a shadowy figure. Like, what point do the alternate colors serve?

I’m sorry the recent pokeani ep did a charmander/chimchar/Tepig (or any other Pokemon we see abandoned by their trainers) with Gengar which made me feel certain emotions so just take the gremlin cutie patootie ghost

While I love purple, especially modern Gengar's usual shades, I have to admit that I feel like the point of the design is kinda lost when you make it so light. I mean it's supposed to be a shadow, and originally it was just that, a dark shadowy figure with purple highlights.

I really hate to be "that guy" yearing for old pokemon stuff but I truly do feel like the 3d era with its pastel palettes really made some pokemon designs suffer and I kind of hate how its been bleeding into the anime

I'm sure gengar's animation is great but oof those colors...

Today's new episode was better than I expected, and finally, Satoshi officially caught his first Ghost type Pokemon, Gengar! It might also be his second shiny Pokemon, every other Gengar has a darker body. We learned
about Gengar's past, too.
