I do line followed by painting colors, it gives it a style that I like, and it's easier for me to set up a "line art" mode than to switch back and forth between the two. I have tried the other method and found it slowed me down quite a bit from the mode shifts.

Deviantart has a little system where you follow a tutorial and then post the outcome and get a little badge, I followed their recent mermaid one. I have realised that I have no idea how to draw a face in profile XD so it was great practice.
