-Never be satisfied with the very first attempt
-Your characters can always look so much better than you initially think.
-Research proportions, so the features don't look janky (this applies to cartoons as well).

honestly my technique is kind of a mess... i do a VERY vague outline, then i initially draw the hair as just a blob, then i add and remove strands/curls sticking out to see what looks okay and put highlights (and if needed shading) on a new layer! kinda like this:
