It’s so we’re sharing this illustration by Scottish botanical artist Elizabeth Blackwell (1707-1758) from her book, A Curious Herbal. She wrote of hemp, “The Seed being boil’d in Milk ... is accounted good for old Coughs, and a Specific to cure the Jaundice.”

The second grievance concerns changes of botanical name. I admit that it is very puzzling to be brought up in our childhood to call lilac Lilac and syringa Syringa; and suddenly to be told in our middle-age that we must call lilac Syringa and syringa Philadelphus.

Peter Thwaites will be part of a 3-artist exhibition at the famous RHS Rosemoor Gardens in Great Torrington from 15th February to 15th March. The emphasis here will be mostly on botanical imagery, including some of his much-acclaimed wild fungi watercolours.
