明治天皇が重態になると、国民は皇居前に集まり平癒を祈願し、東京市は天皇に騒音が届かないように電車を徐行、交差点では軌道にボロ布を敷いたといいます。
明治天皇の崩御は世界各国で報道され、フィリピンでは天皇の挽歌が作られたといわれています。
