11 May 1889, Paul Nash (d.1946), British surrealist painter, born. 2nd Lt in Hampshire Regiment in #WW1, was wounded & then worked as an Official War Artist. Works include powerful views of shattered landscape of No Man's Land. They rank among most memorable images of the war.
Sorry that I haven't posted much, finals been occurring. However, I have done a WW1 style poster thing for class.
7 May 1919, Germans presented with Treaty of Versailles. Were greatly disillusioned by terms. Von Brockdorff-Rantzau, foreign minister: ‘This fat volume was quite unnecessary. They could’ve expressed whole thing more simply in one clause - Germany renounces its existence’. #WW1
5 May 1917, Eugene Bullard (1895-1961) gained pilot's licence. Became 1st African-American military pilot (French Air Service). 1913, went to France. Worked as musician & boxer. On outbreak of #WW1 enlisted in Foreign Legion. Post-war experience of USA led him to settle in Paris.
