This painting shows the area behind Stanley Spencer’s house, Fernlea, in Cookham, Berkshire. Completed after his return from service in WW1, the work is deliberately nostalgic; an elegy of sorts, his brother Sydney was killed in action in September 1918.
28 July 1917, British established its first Tank Corps (1st in world) with Col Hugh Elles in command. 20 Nov 1917, he led 350 tanks into battle at Cambrai. After #WW1, he commanded Tank Corps Training Centre from 1919 to 1923. Retired as a Lt Gen in 1938 & died in 1945, aged 65.
'Dazzle Ship on the Clyde.' (1919) Early in WW1, Steven Spurrier was called up for military intelligence then transferred to the Royal Navy as a dazzle officer on the Clyde; he was responsible for camouflaging various ships including HMS Argus, the world’s first aircraft carrier.

After WW1, Arturo Nathan (1891-1944) suffered severe war trauma and he began painting on the advice of his psychiatrist. In WW2 he was labelled a prisoner of Jewish decent, by the Nazis & was deported to Biberach concentration camp in Germany where he died.
