Rim lighting and deep shadows are my go-to way of making an expression more dramatic and serious. Color and lighting can change SO MUCH about how an expression reads!

In the last couple chapters of Sombulus and especially with Cioara, setting up common facial expressions and then throwing them completely off model intentionally is a big part of the plot.

Sometimes I'll let errors in other areas slide, but expressions are important to me, so they often bear the brunt of the most redrawing. It's important to me that the characters' feelings and motivations be clear to the reader.
