It’s one of my favorite little details of greasers. Her hair is another thing. She wakes up not wearing curlers, which we get into in the story. Her pants are straight legs (men’s style of the 50s). Add a leather jacket and she is a male greaser to a tee.

The fact is most teens weren’t greasers and most greasers... were just chill. 10% of greaser gangs were violent in the 1950s.

Now for writing purposes the gang in Heartbreak Hotel is meant to bridge both. They’re just friends that chill but obviously the story has violence.
