Basically i have an idea where mermaids are akin to say, a man of war, lots of little organisms joined together, in this case, on a poor unsuspecting human. Lots of little tic like bugs create the "scales" and feed off of the human.

Taro was abandoned by their birth family, and he ripped off some of his dragon scales and the pain of that abandonment fuels their ability to cast magic, and Taro kept the first scale he tried to remove as a reminder

One of the most likable, it’s hard picking from refs to draw him. Petit or bulked up? Mutated or regular arm? How to draw the hair scales? I went with an aged up version of the Young X-Men outfit, I think he could look like this currently.
