February 5, 1578: Italian Renaissance painter Giovanni Battista Moroni dies.

Moroni's chief specialty was portraiture—unusual during the Renaissance.

For me, it is Moroni's religious works which are truly fine.

Mantegna’s work fascinates due to his constant attempt to place biblical events within an archaeologically accurate context - representative of Renaissance learning. His Madonnas are, however, some of the most beautiful examples of Maternal love

In 1460 Mantegna was appointed Court artist by Ludovico III Gonzaga at his Ducal Court in Mantua. There he created frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi, Ducal Palace, Mantua (1465-74). These document the Duke & his Court. His oculus is one of the triumphs of the Renaissance

Thread: Andrea Mantegna (c1431-1506) was an Italian Renaissance painter & antiquarian. His work linked modern painting with Roman antiquity. Oculus, Camera degli Sposi (1465-74), Madonna & Child (c1455) & Portrait of a Man (c1470). He is one of my favourite artists

Fortitude (1470). He did however create images that were not religious. These were for sophisticated patrons who were interested in the new learning & the awareness of the ancients that characterised the Renaissance.

He was one of the last major gothic painters yet combined an element of the Renaissance Humanism which swirled around him. This combination of old & new is fascinating. Virgin & Child (1476), St Roch (c1480) & Virgin & Child (c1480)

I love to use Alphonse Mucha as an example. Bam look at all those precise details in the ink work. The shading is minimal and done with a light touch--around chin and eyes to show contours of the face. If he rendered figures like Renaissance painters do, you would see none of it

Inspired by that one renaissance-esque portrait?
