You might be interested to know that Ditko told me, via letter, the reason he changed the Green Goblin's broomstick to a bat was because Stan thought it was too phallic. The bat is iconic now, but I always admired how delightfully weird that first Goblin appearance is.

Still processing the passing of the Ditko...I never really associated him with Spider-Man until later....but I recall finding a couple issues of Shade, the Changing Man at the flea market, and the visuals blew my mind...
