Marianne's swirls represent empty eye sockets. (My) Ghosts appear as a distorted form of their state before death, and Marianne was absolutely mutilated. She doesn't remember much from being human, and doesn't need eyes to see.
I wonder what she'd look like with no swirls?

This one is easier to understand, I think.
Space is distorted, reducing both into bug-size, before being swallowed by a giant kouhai.
This is not exactly trapping someone into a nightmare, but she puts them to sleep. Shirou wakes up as if it was just a bad dream... or... was it?
