I let go of 20 years of trauma today. I forgave my abuser. I relieved them of the expectation to apologize. I moved forward and forgave them of any responsibility or relationship to me. They will never be my father. They will hold no emotional hostage to me. I am walking away.
Just a simple change of wording can do so much. I've started telling my partner "you've got nothing to apologize for" and it's actually help them a lot. It removes the onus on them, and relieves them of any stress and/or guilt they may have been holding on to.
