#FossilFriday The delightfully bizarre teeth of the Oligocene-Miocene hippo-like mammal, Desmostylus (Fresno Co., CA, @calacademy Geology collection)
Just in time for #FossilFriday: How did dinosaur inner ears grow? Can they be used to see changes in locomotion? If these questions interest you, check out our new paper with @ThePalAss! https://t.co/HaTYdzpnZ4 … @vinfernand @jonahchoiniere @ESI_FossilLab @morethanadodo

The fossilized skeletons of pterosaurs - which look quite different from any extant flying vertebrate - baffled many early palaeontologists. One early theory suggested that pterosaurs were flying marsupials.

For #FossilFriday here is a gif showing how backbone regionalization changed during mammal evolution. The highly modular structure of mammals has allowed them to adapt to diverse environments and move in many different ways. Thanks for paving the way non-mammalian therapsids!
Spending this #FossilFriday working on the last few pages of text for LTTAII, including the last page describing a scene of fossil animals. This honour goes to a Silurian marine scene that which I painted for @LukeHauser's thesis. Agnathans and early gnathostomes FTW! #paleoart
My illustration of a member of the order Titanoptera, insects from the Triassic! They were related to modern grasshoppers, and had what seems to be raptorial forelegs. Their wingspan could reach 36cm.

Nyctosaurus lamegoi was the 1st pterosaur discovered in #Brazil at 1953. I took this photo of N.lamegoi 3 days after the fire of the @MuseuNacional. It was a glimmer of hope albeit we still don't know how collections are. Nyctosaurus illustration by @MarkWitton #FossilFriday
Can we take a minute to appreciate just how frigging insane this fossil is.
This is an ichthyosaur with actual skin preserved. Not just that, but even the dorsal and tail fins are preserved! Oh, and the skin around its fins. Ichthyosaurs are epic, just saying #FossilFriday
