I find occasionally putting your work in greyscale helps immensely in seeing the values. High contrast in values creates visual interest, which can be helpful in establishing focal point/mood. Take this work of mine for example, the lighter values in the eye create a focal point

he helps her get outside her own head by sparring with her, and his magic creates mushrooms that light up

and that's it.... until he unlocks his heart
