Paul Jouve travelled to Egypt and Vietnam to study elephants and other native wildlife. He particularly loved big cats. He also illustrated LA CHASSE DE KAA (1930 ed.) further tales by Rudyard Kipling in the same story world.

The salamander was called by the physician Nikander the "soeceress' lizard," and while Pliny gives an accurate description says they can extinguish fire. The properties of salamanders are many until Carl Linnaeus established their scientific description.

The bear prince in East of the Sun and West of the Moon is rather more proactive than the Beast in Beauty and the Beast - he goes looking for a girl who can save him, and essentially buys her from her family, rather than moping around his castle waiting!

The Tortoise and the Hare is an iconic fable about a race between these two swift creatures. The Hare quickly gains the lead getting almost to the end before taking a nap. The Tortoise never stops and slowly passes the sleeping Hare to win the race.
