Usually it's pretty intuitive but try to keep in mind that humans see less detail in dark areas when the whole image is bright and less detail in light areas when the image is dark.

Hey here’s a recent piece I did. Trying my best to follow your tuts. Loved working this way, my aim is to have a more 3d image but I think it comes off flat in areas. I struggled with keeping the light source consistent especially on the hair. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The Donkey Kong series is pretty well repped now tbh, but if we got a new char, I think Dixie makes the most sense. She's neat, a classic Kong, and her hair would definitely provide areas to differentiate her from Diddy.
