Santa was originally Nuuttipukki and then transformed over time into Joulupukki. Don’t ask. Pukki means billy goat. Goats are big in Europe. Some cultures make giant goats out of branches and make a huge goat bonfire.

Santa coming down a chimney has its roots in medieval Europe. It was believed witches invaded homes that way. In Scottish lore, house spirits called brownies enter homes via chimney to do chores. In Irish lore, the evil bodach comes down chimneys to kidnap kids.
