The original Phantasy Star series (1987-1993) was heavily inspired by 70s science-fiction. The character designs reflected this too, you can see the 70s anime influence despite it having been given a late-80s twist.

Honestly, half the fun of Numenera is the zany, futuristic, "science-fantasy" world. Players basically only roll one kind of die & creating enemies and challenges on the fly is super easy. Just set you players free in bizarro-land!
