For a lot of pieces, I tend to work very zoomed out and try to use as few brushstrokes as possible. The more "expensive" an illustration is, the more time I spend detailing and cleaning up.

Close up on It’s always tempting on wood panel to get into a lot of realistic detail - because it allows you to - so I keep the surface fresh with a loose elbow and the occasional big ass brushstroke.
