The sprite is the original. All the promo art is done late in the process when the game is almost done. And if you want to go "VERY" original, then this is the actual concept art that came before the sprites, and it's not particularly pale or thin either.

I remember about 10 years ago, I could only draw one type body shape - thin. Of course other body types apparently exist so been practising drawing more larger/obese shapes. Nice simple design this, so not bad at all.
