1951(昭和26)年の今日、日本初の血液銀行・日本ブラッドバンク(後のミドリ十字。吉富製薬と合併する等して現在は田辺三菱製薬)が大阪に設立された。血液銀行は、献血等により提供者から採取した血液を保存管理して輸血に必要な血液を確保し、必要に応じて供給する機関。
