It was a really smart move for Universal to buy DreamWorks Animation. There was an eleven year gap between two theatrical animated Universal films, which are 1995’s Balto and 2006’s Curious George.
Now Universal has more animated films in their library, including Shrek.

Does anyone one know what this art style is called or if it even has a term, specifically how backgrounds have this simple rough painted look in these different works? I used to only see this for concept art but now seeing it used in finished films, shows, and videos games.
