LINDISFARNE CASTLE. First executed 2000 and re-worked today. Lying off the Northumberland coast Holy Island was the first place in Europe to experience the Vikings when they sacked the monastery in 796 AD. The Castle was built in Tudor times to deter incursions by the Scots.
