I'm not super experienced either so take it with a grain of salt, but there are softer areas in the body where fingers (or the second knuckles) can reach deeper than a fist. For example, the neck or the eyes.

The typical karate side chop, for instance, is tailor-made for necks.

it’s funny because Dragon Ball used highlights effectively for a long time, mainly through Nakatsuru or even Toriyama himself

Yamamuro just used them very improperly and made each character look like a toy, combined with his typical poor linework and colour choices
