On this sad day, let's remember some of the foreign artists who came to England and made great art here. Peter Lely from Holland. Henry Fuseli from Switzerland. Frank Auerbach from Germany. Phillip de Loutherbourg from France. They were obviously trying to tell us something.
It is wonderful to see what has been digitised by our collection team, I think #PreRaphaelite fans will enjoy this one! It is the drapery study for Desdemona's Death Song (the Willow Song) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, dating from c.1879-81.

#SwordAndPlanet devoured this as a freshman in college. It really isn't S&P since it's set on Earth, but the combination of a man from future America exploring an England reduced to barbarism is close. Since ERB wrote it, I think it's fair to make it an honorary S&P novel.

A horse's face guard (chamfron) found at Vindolanda, England. Dated around the 2ndC it originally had eye guards and brass studs in patterns. Worn during horse sports (Hippika gymnasia) the Romans would display incredible skills while wearing face masks and full decorations.
