Maybe Gohan’s battles with Roshi were just part of his training, but at one point Roshi even used his deadly Bankoku-Bikkuri-Sho technique against him, so their fights could still get pretty intense (Roshi never mentions if they fought at the TB, tempting as that is to imagine)
It’s sadly unspecified precisely when or how Gohan came to be Roshi’s disciple, but he and fellow pupil Ox King trained by delivering milk just as Goku and Kuririn later do (I’ll have to save details on Ox King for another day).
Gohan’s fame is established early on: even Oolong knows about him! At some point Roshi gifted him the Nyoibo (Power Pole), and he becomes so well-known for wielding it that Yamcha and Ox King both realize Goku’s connection to Gohan when they see he has it.
