German surgeon Friedrich von Esmarch (1823-1908) founded The Samaritan Society to provide first aid training and developed the ‘Esmarch bandage’ in 1873, used to help remove blood from limbs for surgery. His family crest has a Samaritan Cross and a bloodless arm to honour this!
