They tied the baddie's hands (not his feet), in such a way that he could still go down the ladder by himself and sent him first.

Of course, he escaped.

The characters climb down a shaft on a ladder. One of the rungs simultaneously drops a gelatinous cube down the shaft and opens a spiked pit trap beneath them.
