In Norse mythology the sun is a wheel that changes the seasons & it was from the name of this wheel, houl, that the word yule came. At the mid-winter solstice they would light bonfires, tell stories, drink ale & generally make merry.

The piece is inspired by the legend of the Yule Cat. In Icelandic tradition, this giant and vicious cat is active during Christmas time, when it may travel to towns and cities and eat anyone who hasn't received new clothes to wear before Christmas.
