Researching Edward Stirling, playwright/actor/manager for an upcoming blog. Stirling was an early adapter of - so early, in fact, Dickens frequently wasn't finished with his novels when Stirling's plays hit the stage. Here's an illo for 1840 "Old Curiosity Shop"

An infrared scan and x-ray of this 1847 portrait of revealed the original charcoal lines by artist Daniel Maclise when he began the work as well as small objects and background details hidden under layers of overpaint.
