I use references all the time and more than one besides, one part for the legs, another for the hands, then the body, old photos for the backgrounds, I don't see anything wrong with using them as long as they are not exactly the same (the happy tree friends are mine)

My suggestion is to definitely sketch out your idea first or use references

And yes, I also mean use references of other skins as well. It's how I made my skin. I used a reference of a similar skin to my idea and just started there. It turned out pretty good.

I always make a basic sketch first and when approved, the client proceed with payment and i start (sending pics of the progress of course)
I can design characters by description and references

I finally can actually drop a bunch of decent references cause I compiled my many many doodles together for artfight.
If you end up drawing me, feel free to simplify the feather tufts however you want . They are based on Eurasian Eagle-Owl tufts. ^^
