French Realist Gustave Courbet was #BornOnThisDay 1819. His scandalous Le Somneil 1866 bears an intriguing resemblance to Rossetti's illustration for Goblin Market 1862. Possible 'Sleep' model Joanna Hiffernan was also painted by Courbet in 1855-6 predating Rossetti's Lady Lilith

The @ThePortico Library was there in 1819, and features in the graphic novel. They're stocking the book for a very reasonable £10 discount, so well worth a visit. Hugh Hornby Birley, who led the attack, was an early member, so there's irony to be had!

Malayan tapirs were first described to Western science by Anselme Gaëtan Desmarest in 1819 - seven years after Georges Cuvier discounted the likelihood of “discovering new species of the larger quadrupeds” - and Baird's tapirs weren't described until 1865.

3/3 however, by 1819 a new Easter Monday tradition appeared, and went on to replace the Epping Hunt - namely cycling from the Eagle Inn at #Snaresbrook - which continued right up to the 1970s https://t.co/ATXbNZiEal
