The coastal locations of Margaret Morris's Summer Schools, at which outdoor classes were held and sea-bathing encouraged, gave JD Fergusson a constant supply of models on which to base his work.

John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961) was another colourist. On the Cap (1920s), Pink Carnations & Narcissi (nd), Landscape (1916) & Paris Plage (1902). Fergusson was particularly interested in French art movements. It’s worth noting that Scotland & France have ‘an auld alliance’

The title of this work suggests that JD Fergusson was interested in conveying the quality of neon light in a café interior. This provides a degree of continuity with his earlier interests in capturing the light particular to the time of day, or the weather.
