August 12, 1857, Victorian palaeontologists William Daniel Conybeare dies in Hampshire. In 1821 he described the marine reptile Plesiosaurus, made also important contributions on the anatomy of the Ichthyosauri and worked on the geology of the British Islands ⚒️

In honor of Junchang Lü, I painted this watercolour portrait of #Tongtianlong, “the mud dragon”, one of the oviraptorids he discovered during his prolific career as a palaeontologist. @SteveBrusatte
The fossilized skeletons of pterosaurs - which look quite different from any extant flying vertebrate - baffled many early palaeontologists. One early theory suggested that pterosaurs were flying marsupials.
