Born in Hungary, Jolán Gross-Bettelheim moved with her American husband to Cleveland, Ohio in 1925.

Her first groundbreaking modernist prints of urban and machine-age subjects were made in 1935-36 at Cleveland’s Graphic Arts Workshop run by the WPA Federal Arts Project.

For the second Monday of we would do well to consider the incredible range & exceptional contribution of master printmaker Robert Blackburn, whose work spanned from the socially-engaged art of the WPA era (as in his 1938 lithograph Refugees)

Paintings by American artist Norman Lewis, 1960s, who studied under Augusta Savage and worked on WPA projects along with abstract expressionists like Jackson Pollock. He co-founded influential black artist group Spiral in the 60s.
