- possibly being the most basal known dromaeosaur! It was also small, even for dromaeosaurs, at 70 cm long! With all this in mind, it might've been specialized for a unique ecological niche that allowed it to coexist with its more advanced relatives! (2/2)

of the new basal sauropodomorph, Mbiresaurus raathi! I've been on a real early dinosauria kick lately so the timing of this paper was perfect, what a lovely little guy!! I'm super excited to see what else comes out from this new Zimbabwean faunal assemblage!

Leatherback horses are actually basal rhinos that evolved before horses were introduced to the Iberian continent, but they got along well with their smaller cousins, living in mixed herds protected by stallions weighing over two tons capable of manipulating the wind

An armored dinosaur from Queensland, lived ~130mya during the early Cretaceous. It and its other armored counterparts from and Antarctica may form their own family, but for now they are all considered "basal" ankylosaurids.

the hot new dinosaur! It’s described as a Cretaceous basal thyreophoran (cousin of stegosaurs/ankylosaurs), but others suggest that it might actually be a ceratopsian or a pachycephalosaur relative.

But this thing could have been from a totally different group of animals... compare the skull material to basal ceratopsids

Was expecting a new abelisaurid, got something straight out of a spec project. Meet Jakapil kaniukura, a basal thyreophoran from the Late Cretaceous aged Candeleros Formation! For context, this thing lived alongside Giganotosaurus.
