Audi was in a restrained mood when promoting its upmarket models for 1982, emphasising the economy of its 100 saloon and the hatchback Avant version. Even the high-performance new turbocharged 200 5T and its injected 5E sister were all about fuel efficiency.

Absent from Britain since WW2, Opel returned in the late '60s, with this early range brochure calling the cars 'The Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove'. Precedence was given to the larger Rekord/Commodore series, although the Kadett and Olympia were also on offer.

One disadvantage of GM's plethora of brands is it never had a truly global mass marque. The rebranding of Korean Daewoos as Chevrolets seemed one way this could be achieved. This 2007 UK brochure on the Lacetti comes from this strange, short-lived time.

Mitsuoka is considered Japan's 10th car manufacturer. Well-known for its Viewt model, it has produced a wide range of unusual vehicles over the years. This 2001 Japanese brochure features the retro-style Ryoga saloon, based on a 1500cc Nissan Sunny/Sentra.

I don't usually collect pre-WW2 brochures but here's an exception. The streamlined 'Baby' Steyr Typ 55 was a 4-seater well ahead of its time. Born amid the darkest of times for Austria, it debuted as the 50 in 1936 before this improved version arrived in 1938.

Lancia's 21st century flagship, the Thesis, did not prove much of a sales success over its nine-year life but is remembered for its one-of-a-kind styling. This 2007 German leaflet features a special edition version of the car, called the Thesis Sportiva.

In the twilight of its life the classic Fiat 500 got a few changes from 1971, most notably a larger 594cc engine (which would be used in the coming 126), wheels like the 126, and even simpler trim. The model is often called the 500R. This is a Dutch brochure.

Several small companies over the years have made a living from cars inspired by the classic '50s Porsche 356 Speedster. These include PGO, founded in France in 1985 and still in business. This 2013 brochure features the Cévennes, with BMW/MINI 1.6 turbo engine.

In 1996 Premier of India was trying to fight back against newer rivals on the local market. It began production of the 1.0-litre Fiat Uno to sell alongside its elderly Padmini saloon, which saw a modernised S1 model plus a new 137D with FNM diesel power.

Renault made a bold effort to persuade 'the modern American business man' to convert to its 845cc front-wheel-drive vans, starting in 1959. The new model was called the Estafette in France, but US versions were known as the Petit-Panel, or the taller Hi-Boy.

The Lada 1200 first burst onto the British motoring scene in 1974. The references in the initial brochure to the model 'needing no introduction' and 'look(ing)... strangely familiar' were big hints that it was a Soviet-built version of the well-known Fiat 124.

Sometimes cars can sound good in theory but fail to be understood by buyers. So it was with the Ohio-made Honda Accord Crosstour. A 'sporty' long-tail crossover, it stepped in for the traditional station wagon in 2010 but failed to win over many customers.

Way back in 1949, US marque Kaiser-Frazer came up with this very early type of hatchback, an innovation forced on it out of necessity. Unable to afford a wagon body for its Kaiser saloons, the standard body was adapted, creating the Vagabond and Traveler.

BMC thought it had pulled off the ultimate one-upmanship when launching the new Vanden Plas Princess R in 1964 as 'a car that makes history'. The R signified its Rolls-Royce 4-litre engine, which justified a big price hike over the former 3-litre model.

The Citroën C15 was offered as a 'Familiale' estate car in some markets. This German brochure was produced for a competition to win a limited edition Spacelab model (shown on the cover), and also included imaginary images of other potential editions.

This Austin range brochure reflects the early 70s BL plan to make the marque a high-tech front-wheel-drive one, with the arrival of the new Allegro as the symbol of this intent. The separate Morris dealer chain would theoretically have a rear-drive future.

Peugeot's first new model after WW2, the 1290cc 203 went into production in 1948 and is shown in this early brochure in both saloon and the rarer 4-door cabriolet version. The 203, with its US-influenced styling was the company's only car in the early 50s.

Ford's strength in Europe after WW2 was based on divisions in Germany, Britain and France all making their own designs. Ford France was soon taken over by Simca, but the other two were competitors for years. The Taunus 12M was Ford Germany's first new 50s car.

The noble tradition of big and complex Citroën estates continued into a new decade with the 1991 introduction of the load-carrying version of the XM, which took up the CX Safari's baton. This UK brochure called it 'an estate car unlike any other'.

Its name looks like a misprint but there really was a Ford Tierra, built by the company's outpost in Taiwan, Ford Lio Ho Motor. This model was the country's 1999 Car of the Year. Naturally, like most Asian Fords, it was based on a Mazda, the then-current 323.
